The light-colored sapwood is distinct from the yellow-brown heartwood, which then changes to a darker brown with thin light lines, numerous on surfaces obtained from tangential cutting. The grain is typically interlocked and sometimes irregular.

Uses

Property

Iroko wood has uses similar to those of teak, which it often replaces: it is therefore used for high-quality joinery, for cladding counters and laboratory benches, and draining boards. It is one of the preferred woods for sculptures and carved objects and is ideal for turning processes. It is widely used in ships, boats, and vehicle constructions, and as structural timber for palisades, marine works, and benches for parks and gardens, heated parquet. The peeled wood is intended for the production of plywood, while the sliced wood is for decorative veneers.

The density is 640 kg/m³ after seasoning. The wood dries well and fairly quickly, with slight degradation, it is durable, stable in use, and has medium resistance to bending and breaking, very low stiffness, and low impact resistance. It shows a moderate tendency to shape in the presence of steam. Within the fibers, deposits of calcium carbonate visible in contrast with the surrounding dark wood can damage cutting edges. The fine processing dust can irritate the nose and skin. Nailing, screwing, and gluing are satisfactory. The impregnation of the fibers allows for excellent finishes. The wood is generally very durable and resistant to preservation treatments, although the sapwood is permeable. The latter is subject to attacks by powderpost beetles.
